Eighties-Fifties

In the 80's we loved the 50's.  Do you remember that?  There was this very specific polished look about the 50's, in the 80's.  All the colors were super bright
pinks and turquoises, black and white checks.  All the guys had pompadours, leather jackets and sunglasses, and all the girls wore high pony tails, saddle shoes and poodle skirts.

I refer to this as the eighties fifties, and this is a great example of it.  The toothpaste guys are cool with their 50s "hair" and sunglasses.

I suspect that it really started in the 70's with shows like Happy Days, and Movies like Grease.  They created this super stylized version of the 50's for us to enjoy.

The eighties really hit with movies like Stand By Me, Back to the Future, Peggy Sue Got Married and Dirty Dancing.

Sanrio - Remeber when it wasn't just Hello Kitty?

I know that Sanrio still has lots of other characters, but do you remember the 80's when there were SO MANY other great characters?  It seemed like everytime I went to the "Happiness Shop" (The CUTEST shop in the mall!)  There were new fun character items that I wanted to buy.  I didn't have much money, maybe that's why I am so obsessed with Pop Culture now!

More Sheet Style, and Zap Up the New! 1970's Fashion!

Yep, the idea here is to take off your bed sheets and bed skirts, and make dresses to wear out of them.  I have to admit that I have a shirt made from a 70's floral sheet, and it looks nearly as bad as this!

And haven't we all glued ruffles to our dresses and shoes?  No?  Just me huh?  Okay well, I guess I won't make that faboulous blue sky dress and matching platforms, or make my new dress into a maid's uniform.

Astoria Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce Celebrates Goonies Day: June 7-10, 2012

As a part of the Goonies 25th Anniversary Celebration, Mayor Willis Van Dusen declared June 7 to be officially recognized as Goonies Day in Astoria, Oregon. This date is special to Astorians because it is the anniversary of the day the film was released into theaters in 1985. The Astoria-Warrenton Chamber encourages fans to celebrate the anniversary.  So whether you are in Astoria or on the other side of the world, embrace the spirit of the film: put on a Goonies T-shirt, slip a quote from the film into conversation or watch the film with someone who hasn't seen it before.

Visit our Goonies Day page at oldoregon.com or our Facebook Event for more details and updates.

"Rich Stuff" Trivia Scavenger Hunt
Fans that are here in Astoria join us on a fun, trivia-filled scavenger hunt in a tribute to the film we all love, The Goonies! Pick up the flyer from the Chamber's Visitor Center, participating businesses or download it now and you will find clues to several Goonies-loving businesses and organizations in Astoria. Visit them to get the answers to the trivia questions and learn more about the Astoria community along the way.

The first 150 participants to return a completed answer sheet will receive a special Goonies Day button and all participants will receive a 25th Anniversary coin and postcard. This activity is organized by the Astoria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce and made possible by the participating businesses. Redeem your completed (or nearly complete) answer sheet for prizes at the Astoria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center (111 W Marine Dr) or Video Horizons (750 Astor St.) from June 7-10, 2012.

Three Weeks with the Goonies
As an aspiring film director, author and native Astorian Mick Alderman was invited by director Richard Donner to observe the filming, and wound up spending nearly every day on the set.  His memoir, Three Weeks with The Goonies, takes the reader through The Goonies location shooting process - day by day - and relates a variety of anecdotes and impressions gleaned from the experience.

The Oregon Film Museum has invited Alderman to present his book in person. He will be chatting about his experiences and signing books on Saturday, June 9, at 8:00pm at the Baked Alaska Restaurant. Open mic to follow for others who want to share their experiences.  Program is free; food and beverage service available.

The Oregon Film Museum celebrates the art and legacy of films and film-making in the State of Oregon. Housed in the old Clatsop County Jail, known to Goonies fans as the scene of the opening jail break, the museum invites visitors to explore this and other films and the production behind making movies in Oregon.  The Oregon Film Museum provides visitors the opportunity to make their own movie, with three green screen experiences. Open Daily from 10am to 5pm.

Cherry Merry Muffin Catalog Booklet 1988

This catalog was released in 1988 with the first line of Cherry Merry Muffin dolls.  These were obvious takes on Strawberry Shortcake, but they certainly have their own charm.

There is a great site, http://www.merrymuffinland.net/ that is super complete and has nice photos of all of the dolls and accessories, including commercials, promotions, custom dolls and more.

Click on images to blow them up.
